If you’ve been to any high end gift shop in Ireland, you’ve no doubt seen Nicholas Mosse pottery at some stage. (Whether you knew that’s what it was called or not is another topic.) The Nicholas Moss studio is located in the picturesque village of Bennetsbridge, south Kilkenny and a Kilkenny friend of mine suggested Bennettsbridge as a great family day out location, so this past week we gave it a go. (It was another one of those get-me-out-of-this-house-with-these-stir-crazy-kids kind of days…)
A friend of mine lives near Kilkenny and we met up at the playground in the village to have a picnic and let the kids play together. I was very pleased with the playground equipment and layout, and the fact that it is all grass is a huge perk! (I’m NOT a fan of sand at playgrounds.) To get to the playground, as you enter the village, you turn right to go over the bridge and the park is up ahead on your right, across from the community centre. There are no toilets onsite, so plan ahead 🙂
After we had let the kids burn off all their energy, (come to find out, that’s impossible) we headed over to Nicholas Mosse Pottery. It is situated beautifully on a slow portion of the River Nore in an old mill, dating back to 1503. It is here, in this quaint old mill, that every piece of their pottery is handcrafted and hand painted.
The first floor has the main gift shop and the areas where you can watch the potter and the painters as they skillfully craft each item.
Upstairs is the little cafe and another area full of items for sale and seconds/marked down pottery. I wouldn’t recommend bringing seven children ages 7 and under…the space is lovely and charming, but not suitable for a wild bunch. The food was delicious and everything is served on their own pottery. I love having tea or coffee in one of their hearty mugs.
Another attraction to the area is Nore Valley Park and Pet Farm There is a campground for the adventurer or, on a day trip, you can visit the farm and pet the animals, go to the playground, play mini golf, or race around the pedal go kart track. Apparently there’s a ton to do…we’ll have to head over there on our next visit to Bennettsbridge.
